TEXT COMPARE GUIDE

Text Diff Checker – Compare Two Texts and Find the Differences Online

Looking for a free text diff checker? Compare two pieces of text and see exactly what changed between them. Paste an original and a changed version, and the tool highlights every added and removed line, word, or character. You can view the result side by side or inline, ignore differences in case or spacing, and copy the diff with one click. Everything runs in your browser, so your text is never uploaded, and there is no signup or watermark.

Compare Text Line by Line

See which lines were added, removed, or changed. Changed lines also highlight the exact words that differ, so you can spot small edits quickly.

Word and Character Diff

Switch to word or character mode to compare running text such as paragraphs, sentences, and short snippets, where line breaks do not matter.

Clear Added and Removed Text

Added text is shown in green and removed text in red, with line numbers and a summary of how many lines or words changed.

How to Compare Two Texts Online

You do not need to install a diff program to find the differences between two texts. Use the online text diff checker by following these simple steps.

  1. Add the original text: Paste it into the Original text box, or click Upload file to load a text file from your device.
  2. Add the changed text: Paste the new version into the Changed text box, or upload a second file.
  3. Choose how to compare: Pick Lines, Words, or Characters. For line comparisons you can also choose a side-by-side or an inline view.
  4. Set your options: Turn on Ignore case or Ignore whitespace if capital letters or extra spaces should not count as differences, and use Show only changes to hide long unchanged parts.
  5. Review and copy the result: Check the highlighted differences and click Copy diff to copy them as text.

The result updates automatically as you type. You can compare up to 500,000 characters on each side, and uploaded files can be up to 2 MB.

Line, Word and Character Comparison: Which Should You Use?

  • Lines: The best choice for code, configuration files, lists, and any text where each line matters. Changed lines also mark the words that differ.
  • Words: Ideal for paragraphs, articles, emails, and contracts, where a sentence may wrap differently but the wording is what you want to compare.
  • Characters: Useful for short strings, such as codes, names, and numbers, where a single changed letter or digit matters.

Side by Side or Inline View?

In the side-by-side view the original text is on the left and the changed text is on the right, so you can read both versions at the same time. The inline view shows one column, with removed lines marked by a minus sign and added lines marked by a plus sign, which suits narrow screens and long lines.

What Can You Use a Text Diff Checker For?

  • Code and configuration: See what changed between two versions of a script, a settings file, or a snippet.
  • Documents and contracts: Find edits between two drafts of a document.
  • Writing and editing: Review the changes an editor or a colleague made to your text.
  • Data and lists: Compare two exported lists, logs, or tables to see which entries differ.

A diff shows the differences between texts, so a change that moves a paragraph to another place appears as one removal and one addition rather than as a move.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Frequently Asked Questions About Comparing Text

Find answers to common questions about comparing two texts and reading the differences.

How do I compare two texts?

Paste the original text into the first box and the changed text into the second box. The differences appear below right away, with added text in green and removed text in red.

What do the green and red colors mean?

Red marks text that exists in the original but not in the changed version, so it was removed. Green marks text that exists only in the changed version, so it was added. Text without color is the same in both.

What is the difference between comparing by lines, words and characters?

Line mode compares whole lines and also highlights the changed words inside each changed line. Word mode compares the text word by word and ignores where the lines break. Character mode compares every single character, which is useful for short strings.

How do I ignore differences in capital letters or spaces?

Turn on Ignore case to treat uppercase and lowercase letters as the same, and Ignore whitespace to ignore differences in spaces, tabs, and extra spaces at the start and end of lines.

What is the difference between side-by-side and inline view?

Side by side shows the original on the left and the changed text on the right. Inline shows a single column where removed lines start with a minus sign and added lines start with a plus sign. Inline is easier to read on a phone.

Can I compare two files?

Yes. Click Upload file above each box to load a text file, such as a TXT, CSV, JSON, HTML, CSS, JS, PHP, or Markdown file, with up to 2 MB per file. Binary files such as images, PDFs, and Word documents are not supported.

Can I use it to compare code?

Yes. Line mode works well for code and configuration files, and changed lines highlight the exact words that differ. Use Show only changes to hide long stretches of unchanged code.

What does Show only changes do?

It hides long runs of unchanged lines and keeps a few lines of context around each change. You can click a gap to show the hidden lines again.

Is there a size limit?

You can compare up to 500,000 characters in each box, and uploaded files can be up to 2 MB. Character mode works best for texts up to about 30,000 characters. For larger texts, use line or word mode.

Why does it say the texts are too different to compare in detail?

When two texts share almost nothing, a detailed comparison would be slow, so the tool shows the whole original as removed and the whole new text as added. Try comparing smaller parts, or use word mode.

Is my text sent to a server?

No. The comparison runs in your browser, and your text and files are not uploaded or stored.

Is this text diff checker free?

Yes. You can compare texts online for free, with no signup and no watermark.
